How Steve Bracks saved a suicide jumper on West Gate bridge

FORMER premier Steve Bracks and his wife Terry saved a man seconds before he was about to jump from the West Gate Bridge.

"Terry and I (pictured right) did what any other Victorian would have done and helped another person in trouble," Mr Bracks said yesterday.

The Bracks were returning home on Thursday night when they saw a large man "standing on the railings obviously looking as though he was about to throw himself off".

Mr Bracks and two other men - one of them an off-duty police officer - pulled him to safety.

But it was Mrs Bracks who was first on the scene and who tried to talk the man down before he was dragged to safety and restrained.

"Terry and I both said 'this looks dreadful', and we stopped (the car)," Mr Bracks said in a statement to the Herald Sun.

"Terry got out and went there first because I had to stop the car. She talked to him first and tried to engage him in conversation but he was in a very distressed state and not responding.

"He was obviously in a very agitated state, and very angry and not himself."

Mr Bracks said he also attempted to talk the man down before "two strong blokes who stopped and immediately assisted" helped wrestle him down. "They were excellent," Mr Bracks said.

The man was held until police arrived minutes later.

Mr Bracks said he was pleased the man survived, and urged anyone in that condition to seek support and help.

The incident happened on an outbound section of the bridge at 11.55 on Thursday night, 1km east of the Williamstown exit Mr Bracks uses to return home.

A police source said the actions, in the crisis, of Mr and Mrs Bracks and the two other men, deserved great credit.

"It's great to see the community get involved rather than ignore something like this," he said.

"They've done a great job. It would have been a really difficult situation.

"This could have ended a lot differently.

"That fence is not particularly high. To grab someone who is thinking of launching themselves off is to put yourself in harm's way.

"They've got to be commended for their actions."

Police said some members had risked their lives, almost falling to their own deaths, trying to cling to people intending to jump.

The man saved by Mr and Mrs Bracks and the two men is aged in his 50s and from the Mornington Peninsula.

Police took him to hospital.

The near tragedy follows debate about the installation of safety devices to stop people plunging from the bridge.

The issue was tragically put into the spotlight when Darcey Freeman, 5, was thrown to her death in January. Darcey's father, Arthur, has been charged with her murder.

Last year, a mother jumped from the bridge holding her 18-month-old son. Both died.

The State Government has fast-tracked a $20 million project to build suicide-prevention barriers the length of the bridge.

Premier John Brumby announced after Darcey's death that he hoped the work could be finished before its expected completion date of late next year.

At least 58 people have committed suicide from the West Gate since 2003.
