The AFL proudly state that the game attracts as many women to games as it does men, yet in the Media we have a mainly male dominated AFL Media Industry. Sure we have Caroline Wilson and a few others but most Women are either sent up as a Joke or treated with the Tokenism most of the male dominated Forums think they deserve. Even on Club boards we have a very small percentage of women represented on their boards, ALL AFL Clubs are massively dominated by men with women not getting much of a look in.

Onto the various AFL Fan sites and their related forums, of the pies forums I can only think of one where women are represented highly. Big Footy has 2% membership being female, that for the biggest AFL fan site is a disgrace but what can be done. We often see the girls on Forums being ganged up on and them leaving the forum forever or coming back on not ticking either box for the question about sex, male or female. Often if a woman has a strong view on an AFL subject they are derided and their posts are picked at as well as their personality. This doesn't go on with the guys to anywhere near the same extent so when a woman starts defending herself against the personal abuse she finds all of a sudden she is in trouble with the Moderators who don't seem to see what is happening.

Maybe this explains the 2%.

Should Big Footy become proactive and make sure every forum on the site has a Female Moderator in their mods team for every forum that make up Big Footy. I think this would help bring the numbers up and bring the women out of hiding. The argument will probably be with only 2% of the Big Footy membership being female why should anymore than 2% of the mods be female, well what came first the chicken or the egg.

Fan sites should be open and welcoming place's for Female AFL fans to show their support and talk about the game with fellow fans on an equal level. For some reason maybe it's because these sites have not kept pace with what we refer to as "the real world" they allow women to be driven away by the blokey culture that is meant to be AFL Footy.
