View Full Version : The inevitable Greg Matthews appreciation thread

Clearly the main benefit to SBS having the Ashes is the return of the special comments of one of Australia's finest allrounders - Greg Matthews. A man who finished with a better batting average than Mark Waugh, and took more 10 wicket hauls than Paul Reiffel.
Now there might be a few detractors to Mo's unconventional style, but this is a fairly cool place, so we'll forgive you. Unfortunately you'll still have to sit over in the corner of cunts with Jim Maxwell, who fucked Mo over when he started to gather a following on the ABC.

Wankerstein Jim Maxwell.
Some interesting facts about Mo.
- Ripped his daks climbing over a fence to get into his debut match at the MCG. The guy at the gate wouldn't let him in.
- Greg Chappell tore up his first match cheque because Mo was quoted saying he'd play for Australia for free.
- Cleaned up Phil Jaques for 5 in club cricket earlier this year.
- New Zealand started a hate campaign against him in the 80's.

Ok, just under. :o
I tell a lot of people that and they believe me. I think I've been telling the lie so often that I've started believing it myself.

Don't mind Greg Matthews, as long as he doesn't go too overboard with his funky hipcat lingo. Looks like a bit of a strange line up for the SBS coverage, they've also got that fuckwit MacGill and Damien Martyn who isn't exactly media friendly. Although apparently they also have Rodney Hogg over in the UK, who is always good value.

Stewie McGill is about as interesting as vanilla flavoured milk TBH. Rodney Hogg however is a fucking lunatic who may well flip out if we get done in the first test.

It's exciting though, anything could happen.
MacGill has form as a powder keg. Mo speaks his mind, so does Rodney Hogg and not sure what to make of Martos.
I expect Mo to call for his own inclusion in the Australian team before the first test is out.

Haha, I'm half expecting it - fuck I hope he does.
I reckon he might do that, but he'll definitely state that Hauritz and maybe North need to spend a week or two with Uncle Mo, and he'll teach them how to bowl properly.

Mo apparently reckons McGill was a better bowler than Warnie and should have played in the '05 series. Off to a flyer there Mo :thumbsu:

Didn't mind MacGilla that much. He was alright at the end. Defending the bowlers for having agression and showing it on the field, despite the attempts of CA to have them behave as emotionless drones.
Compare that to some fuckstick like Quarters who'd be howling about agression on the football field.

England enjoyed a great opening session on the second day of the First Test, but Australia are back in the game thanks to Simon Katich and Ricky Ponting's outstanding 189 run partnership.
I've only seen England bowl for two sessions so far. Forget 'Where's Wally?' I'm thinking 'Where's Harmison?'
Stuart Broad, you're a pretty boy, you look good, you're sweet, your old man scored a lot of runs against me. It's not personal, but I just don't think you should be taking the new ball for England.
James Anderson, I tell you what champ, you better start swinging that sucker left or right or whatever you need to do man, because you're just not looking good for it. We're talking two sessions, and you've got another three days and four Tests in front of you. You're under the pump, England.
There has been so much hype about Graeme Swann. He's taken 34 wickets in seven Tests, but he didn't make a ball bounce over stump-high all day. I couldn't get my head around that.
Nathan Hauritz came out in the morning and off five overs he took 2 for 28, but more importantly he made the ball turn and bounce over the stumps. That's want you want from a spinner. Turn and bounce are everything.
The two spinners for England couldn't do that. They bowled the wrong lines. They were happy to be milked but not dominated.
Andrew Flintoff was dynamic in his first spell, but the scary thing for England was that his third spell was down on his first two. Not a good sign for the series.
Australia are still 186 runs behind, and two or three quick wickets in the morning will turn the game back in England's favour. Having said that, Ponting and Katich look well settled.
Simon Katich is a man of great integrity, and that is why I respect him. He is the kind of guy I want to go to war with. The kind of guy I would like marrying into my family. I know I can take him at his word. He is a guy who knows right from wrong and lives by that creed. He doesn't suffer fools, and I learnt that as soon as I met the bloke.
He came over from Western Australia and I played him in Grade cricket. He got knocked over for a duck and we went and had a beer and a chat afterwards. It's great being around a bloke like Simon, and his wife Georgie is also a great person.
Katich is the Uluru of Australian cricket, and if I was chairman of selectors I would have him captaining every form of the game because we know that we'd be rock solid. We know the guy, as a custodian of the sport, would take the game forward and leave it in a better place.
In contrast today, Phillip Hughes looks ugly, he bats ugly and he got out ugly.
The thing that really worried me was that he had obviously worked very hard on getting his back foot across towards off-stump at delivery. That worked pretty well against Broad and Anderson, but when Flintoff came on it changed the pace of the game.
Flintoff changed the atmosphere and charged the ground and the England team. Hughes was all over the shop. Feet off the ground, no foundation, no base to work on.
He was a sitting duck and he got shot.
A positive for Hughes is that he'll have Katich down the other end, and I'm sure everyone will rally around the youngster because he's done some pretty special things. He was great in South Africa, he's been great for NSW.
It just appears to me that this is the first time he's been faced with adversity. And he's got a mighty big challenge ahead of him.

Yeah MacGill has improved from his first test shocker, he can actually read an autocue now without looking like an extra from Shaun of the Dead.
