So, Joey said that to beat the Qldrs, they'd need to shut down 'that big black ****,' - referring to Greg Inglis.
Tahu quit the team as a result.
Fair enough, or is Tahu being a gigantic faggot (he has a rep as a sook)?

If Joey had said, 'big ****,' instead of 'big, black ****' it obviously wouldn't be a big deal, and I guess that's part of it - is calling a black guy 'black' without any malice or intent, racist?
If he's said other, offensive racial stuff in the past, then it makes it more understandable.

It has plenty of malice and intent imo.
You're calling the guy a 'c unt' and have no reason to bring his blackness into it. Not only that, try calling a black co-worker in an office 'a black c unt' and see how much longer you stay employed.
I'm sick of footy clubs being considered sacrosanct for societal norms - they're happy to put on a public face pretending to be socially progressive, but most football players are nothing short of rapist cavemen.

Think he's setting the right example myself.
Say he just ups and belts Johns over it - he's teaching his kids that it sok to just go and belt blokes if they upset you. Violence is enough of a problem within Islander communities without role models making it worse.
He accepts it and doesn't say anything - telling his kids to just be a doormat in the fact of adversity.
He whinges privately to rugby officials - can compromise the team and their chances, unfair on the other players.
He quits and publicly states why - shows everyone some thing are more important than sport, and that this is how you handle it like a man.

Personally I think the wave of ginger-hate in recent years is just another form of acceptable racism. I don't rate it as a form of comedy.
He's clearly not making the comment in just a tactical way though, is he? He's using it as a gee up for the team, and by adding the word black he thinks it gives the statement more malice. It's fucking pathetic, but what do you expect from professional footballers in this country? They're a pack of dickheads.

Normally I'd agree, but black **** in particular can't be separated from just calling someone an 'adjective' cunt. Used together I believe it is racist.
On the flipside, a black man telling someone to shut down that 'white cunt' would not be made a major deal of. But that's a different kettle of fish.

Racism is just one of our many ways we try to convince ourselves we are teh bestest. as for asylum seekers, well, to be perfectly honest, I don't necessarily think that international borders are moral to start with. I don't reckon we have any more inherent right over this country than some poor bastard from Africa or one of those other loser continents. There's a difference between immigration and refugees. I'm anti-immigration at the moment too, and believe its pumped up to inflate house prices and provide cheap labour, but I'm all for bringing in refugees in a humane and effective manner (i.e. unlike the one we use currently where we basically throw them in giant jails in the desert or Christmas island and restrict their access to basic services).
I don't really have an opinion either way on how many refugees should come in - but any that get here should be given visas. I'd prefer if there were none, but that isn't going to happen. Throwing them in jail certainly doesn't help anyone.

I always thought it was something like the nearest safe haven?
The thing with international standards and agreements is that there isn't some overarching authority who forces everyone to follow the law.
Its completely reliant on the countries that ratify the agreement to continue to hold themselves to that standard. When countries start dropping the ball, the UN can usually only condemn them for it. It isn't like they throw the Prime Minister in jail over it or anything.
And unfortunately, when it comes to human rights agreements - most of the signatories are going to be western European nations, because they have higher standards of human rights. But its important to set that example I reckon, so that other countries see its possible to do.

When I say 'I'd prefer there to be none" I mean that I'd prefer their own countries weren't so farked that their situation wasn't so bad that they'd think it was reasonable to move to ours at great risk and cost.
All refugees get visas anyway, as long as they're found to be refugees. Can't send them back.
What we can do is be a bit more grown up about it, and not have everyone locked up 700km outside of Darwin, or offshore. Makes it way harder to process people and determine who is a refugee and who isn't. Not exactly a great welcome mat to Australia either.
If its illegal immigration you're worried about, asylum seekers aren't your target.

Alleged details emerge of Andrew Johns' racial slur against Timana Tahu
By Wayne Heming
June 15, 2010
An Aboriginal leader claims Andrew Johns let fly with several racist slurs including "coon, Abbo, nigger and monkey" before winger Timana Tahu's dramatic Origin walk-out.
Sol Bellear - an NRL Indigenous Council board member - says he had spoken to senior members of Tahu's family who revealed the full extent of Johns' intoxicated comments during a Blues bonding session in northern NSW last Wednesday.
"It was all the usual things: 'you back 'c'', Abbo, coon, nigger, monkey' - they were were all used," said Bellear.
"It wasn't just directed at (Israel) Folau and GI (Greg Inglis) it was at (Sam) Thaiday and JT (Johnathan Thurston)."
But Johns' manager John Fordham dismissed Bellear's allegations.
"These claims are totally refuted and rejected," he said.
NSW skipper Kurt Gidley also came to Johns' defence, saying his former Newcastle Knights teammate was not a racist.
NRL CEO David Gallop urged Johns and Tahu to settle their differences sooner rather than later.

OK, so apparently we are racists and anti refugees? We are the second largest provider of refuge as a 3rd party nation in the world, with a quota of 15,000 people per year (0.0075% of our population) behind the US (80,000, 0.0002%) and ahead of Canada and NZ. Now if you look at 3rd party resettlement in 2008 there were 121,000 refugees, and Australia and the US took 95,000 of them (yep, about 80%), yet we seem to be copping international press about refugees and boat people. IMO maybe a few of the countries (especially some European countries) should have a look in thier own backyard before they start critisising others.
Shit, even NZ only take 750 refugees per year.

We're under criticism, rightly, because of our treatment of refugees, not the amount we take in.
We're the only nation that locks men, women and children up in concentration camps, deny them basic services and we get no particular benefit out of doing so. In fact, its incredibly costly to fly people in and out from Christmas island or the middle of nowhere-WA/NT.
Admittedly its gotten better in recent years, but I raised it in response to the incorrect assertion that racism isn't a problem in Australia. Not sure how many of you recall the Children Overboard affair, but when our prime minister starts using refugees who nearly drowned as a political scapegoat, and then avoids responsibility for lying about what actually happened, its pretty clear there's a fairly fucked up level of xenophobia in this nation.
Also, I'd query your statistics because most European countries take in more refugees than us a year - but I'm not sure what you mean by 'third party' - is that referring to refugees who have arrived here after passing through a different (possibly non-signatory) nation before arriving in Australia?
I particularly dislike the demonisation of refugees in relation to immigration policy (which I agree is bad policy at the moment). The vast majority of overseas born immigrants come from non-refugee nations like South Africa, Italy, China and India. Not only that, most of the refugees at present are coming from Iraq and Afghanistan, and likely wouldn't be refugees if we didn't topple their relatively stable, yet brutal, governments in recent years.

Everyone in green is a signatory to the UN Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees, as you can see, if you're coming from Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Pakistan or Iraq, your options are pretty limited outside of Australia if heading eastward (and that's the most likely direction, unless you're going to try and travel through Iran and Iraq, and good luck with that).

They are UNHCR figures for refugees basically going from the nearest safe place of refuge to the 3rd party country.
The people who are locked up are people outside the UNHCR system, who we basically know nothing about. Usually anyone who wants to enter Australia requires a visa (background check), apart from NZers or they need to be part of the UNHCR program.
My argument here Rick is that plenty of these peope require refuge, and I understand that this is a last chance for them, but until we know about their past should they really have the right to be part of our society?

There's a difference between being part of our society, by which I assume you mean just having complete unfettered access to all services, residency etc. and locking them up in the fucking desert and making it next to impossible for them to get legal advice.
Not really a partisan issue either, Keating came up with the idea, Howard exploited the fuck out of it because he knew it would tap into the One Nation vote, and Rudd has scaled it back a bit - the manner we manage it in is based on xenophobia, probably from all that Yellow Peril propaganda and White Australia nonsense the warped baby boomer minds were exposed to.

Yes they are. Because we say they are, and so do a shitload of other nations.
No they're not. That definition is bullshit. If you're a refugee, you don't pick and choose what country you can go to. You don't have tens of thousands of dollars to your name. Legitimate refugees are the ones you see on tv walking by foot from Rwanda to a neighbouring country because they'll die if they stay.
Were the Europeans who migrated to Australia in the 50's and 60's refugees? Their journey was a lot tougher than these boat people. By your definition they were refugees.

No they're not. That definition is bullshit. If you're a refugee, you don't pick and choose what country you can go to. You don't have tens of thousands of dollars to your name.
If those countries don't accept refugees, or don't recognise their status, then how do you stay there? You can't and you'll be sent back.
I don't care what your personal opinion is on the worthiness of a refguee, as far as their status goes, they're refugees. They can't be refugees in a country that doesn't acknowledge refugee status. That definition is.... the definition.
Your definition is one based on anger at... nothing more than xenophobia as far as I can tell.
Legitimate refugees are the ones you see on tv walking by foot from Rwanda to a neighbouring country because they'll die if they stay.
Most African nations are signatories to the UN Refguee convention, so its fine for Rwandans to flee to neighbouring countries because they're given refugee status when they get there. Bit different for Sri Lankans though.
Were the Europeans who migrated to Australia in the 50's and 60's refugees? Their journey was a lot tougher than these boat people. By your definition they were refugees.

My mrs' parents emigrated to Aus from Serbia, because like a lot of Serbs their parents went and worked in the German factories in WW2 just to make a crust. When they tried to come home after the war in the 50's the partisans machine gunned a heap of them.
They talked their way out of an internment camp as the old mans father knew one of the guards, who told them to fuck off as soon as it was dark and get on a nearby train. Then jumped the first ship they could in Croatia and GTFO to Australia, by chance.
Of course they were reffos

It depends on the context. For example my mates will always say u black c*** as just a joke or a nickname. Why should I take offence to that? There is no malice in what they are saying. IMO it's only racist if there is genuine negative feelings behind what is being said and you purposely intened to insult a black person.

You're way off. My family is made up of more ethnicities than anyone you know. Family bbq's are like a UN meeting except there's slightly less bullshit. My sister's Sri Lankan and I've got a few Sri Lankan mates whose families went about migrating the right way with no trouble.
Of course they were refugees, that's why in the 1950's the UN Convention on the Status of Refugees was established. It was considered a fundamental learning form the outcome of WW2 that refguees need to be treated humanely and resettled if possible. Going back even further you could look at the Irish Famine as another example of refugees.
My Grandparents and Dad came here in the 1950's from Germany. They were migrants, not refugees. My Grandpa saw more shit on a U-Boat after a Spitfire flew over the top than you can ever imagine. At 19 years old, he walked in front of German tanks in Holland with a metal detector looking for mines. He even saw Hitler in the flesh.
Eventually he was captured and became a POW in England. This is where he met my grandmother who was a legitimate refugee having fled Estonia and the commie Russians. It's amazing but you actually learn a lot more by talking to people who've been there when shit gets real than you can by reading wikipedia and the SR&P board.
After the war my grand parents went back to Germany where they had jobs and a house. They decided to migrate to Australia, they weren't seeking refuge. They knew there'd be more opportunity in Australia and the USA but they could've stayed in Germany and made a successful life for themselves just as my grandfather's brother did.

Footy great Mal Brown describes indigenous players as cannibals triggering a race storm
"We have a distinct disadvantage the West Australians because the Victorians picked both sides," Brown, who played and coached for most of his career in Western Australia, told the luncheon
"They cheated, they picked the best players. And because there were no lights, I couldn't pick any of the cannibals.
"I couldn't pick Nicky Winmar or Michael Mitchell or Chrissy Lewis. All the good black fellows, we couldn't pick them because they couldn't see them in the light."
Lolz
Mal later said
“There was no bias or malice or hate or prejudice in my use of the word cannibal. But I do regret saying it."
And great orator Doug Hawkins weighed in
“You had to be in the room,” Hawkins told Radio 3AW.
He described Brown as an intelligent person who was not a racist and said the comments were taken out of context.
Haha, fuck. Out of context? He called blackfellas cannibals

Record the club songs using didgeridoos and other aboriginal instruments like clapping sticks.
Would be awesome for the promotion of our diverse Indigenous culture and their unique music ...
Also, could we perhaps start using these instruments at matches in the same way trumpets (and vuvuzelas) are used. Or is that offensive to the Indigenous culture? <- i dont know if it is or not.
lol fuck
BTW i can't see any issue with people bringing didgeridoos, basically a heavy 6 foot wooden pole, to the footy

Mate I gotta drag around a 6 foot pole with me everyday and apart from a few logistical issues it's never been a problem.

Once or twice, sure.
True story. Aboriginal legend has it that the didgeridoo was invented by a mean giant blowin' on his old fella. Seems plausible.
I remember hearing it as a kid and ROFLing all over the place...probably just because I heard the word 'penis'.
The giant, in his angry haste, fell into the pit and was immediately killed with many spears thrown by tribal hunters hiding nearby. As he curled on his penis, looking very much like a huge porcupine, he began to blow on his penis, making an amazing droning sound. They tried to copy it, to no avail' so they searched for and found a large hollow log, the center of which had been eaten out by termites. By blowing on one end of this hollow log, they were able to create the sound made by the giant in his death throws.

I'm part black, genuinely. Its pretty far back though, but I'm 'slave' black, not abo black. And as everyone knows, even a small amount of West African black beats all other forms of blackness when talking about purity and quality of said blackness.
Arguing which is the best African is like arguing which is the best Hilton sister, either option is full of AIDS

Fight the power nucka.
Even members of TLS will put up with 'shit' talk for the lulz for a while, but everything you say (on this topic) is negated by that post.
It's like because I have a gay friend doesn't entitle me to openly say gay jokes, or just cause a man dates a woman doesn't give him the right to talk about periods with his co workers.

Firstly, who the fuck are you and why are you here?
Secondly, you're a fuckwit, go die.
Thirdly, If you found my post offensive, suck shit.

Typical overreaction. Mal Brown is old school and was just talking about what he said years ago when people weren't such politically correct fuckwits.
My old man has had lunch with Mal a few times, as he works with a few people that know him, and he reckons he's one of the nicest blokes you could meet. Not anything like his macho tough guy persona.

The problem, again, when its made publicly, is that it gives credence to the actual racist dickheads out there and ends up justifying our already racist policies towards aboriginals and refugees etc. Don't personally give a fuck what 'inside jokes' Mal wants to make privately, but when you make the statement to EVERYONE, you have to expect that SOMEONE is going to get pissed off about it.
p.s. "Being old school" = Being a racist fuck
But I've posted enough on that. Mal Brown doesn't know how to raise a son, let alone string a coherent sentence together, hope the fucker gets MS or something.
Fuckin whinging coons.
